The strength of family ties in that era was extraordinary. In the years after the Civil War, thousands of freedpeople went on desperate searches for lost family members. The Hairstons were among them. In the postwar letters of Peter Hairston I found an enigmatic account, just a few lines long, of an epic journey undertaken by a group of black Hairstons from Virginia. What we know about it comes down to us thirdhand. The black Hairstons told an overseer about the trek; the overseer described it to Peter Hairston, and he wrote about it in a letter to his wife. He did not usually record events in the lives of the black Hairstons, so this journey must have struck him as astounding.
